Women are the ones who are predisposed for the birth due to their anatomy, while men lack the same ability.Women are more tender and caring beings which is something that a new-born depends on in the early stages of its life.The mother is the one who takes care of the feeding and the survival of the offspring, while the father is there to support her (support meaning both emotionally and any other way necessary).As a consequence, this did make some damage to women’s employment prospects.What is also interesting to address from the biological point of view is different body textures in women and men.Men are of a more sturdy muscular built while women are willowy and slender. Males respond better to environmental conditions than women.On the other hand, women are more sensitive to other people’s feelings and are more perceptive. Sometimes the choices they make bear large significance to their earnings.For example, it is common knowledge that mechanical engineers are well paid.Somehow, the majority of engineers (mechanical or other) are men. It is also common knowledge that a nurse’s job is a relatively well-paid one, but nurses are women by far.One cannot deny there are highly skilled and competent female mechanical engineers or that there are male nurses providing the same patient care as the female ones.In both cases, unfortunately, we are speaking of such a low number.The point here is not that nurses are paid less than mechanical engineers.The point here is that a male and a female nurse will get the same compensation for the work they do, just like the male and female mechanical engineer, all based on their total accomplishments.As we have already gone through biological predispositions, we have accordingly established that men and women are not physically the same.Men respon d better to heavy-duty working conditions, whilst women do not.This is why it is more acceptable for a man to do a physically challenging work than to let a woman do it. We have already established that today’s society is fully organized around profit and gain.In such an establishment it is only relevant how much work you actually manage to accomplish.What we have also established is that women have traditionally been the home-keepers.In addition to the natural predisposition, it is nowadays understood that a woman is still the one who needs to be there for the family without any exceptions. Now let us see what this really means in practice.Let’s take a man and a woman, with the same background story (married, with children) occupying the same working position within a company as an example.Let’s assume that they work under the same conditions (hours, insurance, paid leave, etc.) and they work for exactly the same amount of compensation.As long as t here are no external factors to disturb the ideal situation, they will both make the same progress and earn the same amount of money, provided that they give the same quality of work.But, what happens when an external factor disturbs the given state of affairs? For example, the woman gets pregnant. Or, a child gets sick.Perhaps, school projects need to be done with a parent involved or a PTA meeting needs to be attended. What happens in case of a divorce?Naturally, when a woman gets pregnant, she will eventually have to leave work temporarily in order to tend to the new born.Fathers will also be allowed to take their leave of absence once the child is born, but they mostly opt not to do it. For women, there is no choice.During the first months of its life, the baby will need the mother more for mere biology reasons. Nursing is just one instance.The situation gets even more so complicated if the pregnancy is risky, and the woman needs to be either hospitalized or stay at home until s he’s due.Further, after the baby is born, due to (mistakenly) gender assumed and socially imposed roles, what do you think who takes care of those PTA meetings and other situations mentioned two paragraphs earlier? Of course, it will be the woman.Somehow, men tend to consider such affairs dull and time-consuming, leaving them to be dealt with by their better half.And as the woman is off to take care of all the hospital visits, school projects and tasks, or nurse the child in any other way, it only results in consequences career-wise.Additionally, the scenario which makes the situation most difficult for women is a divorce.By the laws of nature, the mother is the one whom the child is assigned to leaving the fathers with more free time to pursue their careers.In such a situation, a woman is torn apart between providing for the family and other sorts of well-being.Though the previous few paragraphs might seem to provide a bit of a lengthy explanation, they actually perfectly depict how various factors related to family care take their toll on the actual working hours and consequentially the earnings of a female employee.Although she does get some kind of compensation for the time off, it is less than what she will get when she works full time without leave of absence.The above has displayed only one instance when the numbers are in favour of men. Customers like it more when they are served by a man?This can’t be true.The job does not take any particular skills except for being steady enough not to pour everything down to a customer’s lap.So why should a man, just because he is a man, be paid more than a woman in such a situation?IS EVERYTHING TRULY SO BLACK AND WHITE?Throughout the article, it almost seems that we have been trying to prove that the gap truly exists and that the men are indeed paid better.However, we just wanted to lay out facts contributing to popular opinion. It is a country where ideally, everybody gets equal chances.How come that in the US we encounter such professions where women are actually paid more than men?According to an article published on the CNBC website, there are ten distinguished professions where women are paid more than men, most notably in agriculture and electrical and electronic engineering. Interestingly, another source indicates that women’s earnings in construction jobs also tend to be higher than those of their male colleagues.Moreover, high-precision jobs and jobs which require higher aesthetic quality are usually performed by women.Women have smaller and steadier hands and are better at visualizing, which makes them more fit for the job. Naturally such kind of job means higher earnings.If you search the Internet you will find a plethora of articles tackling the issue of gender pay gap indicating this or that number of professions where women are more paid than men.What is more important is that those w ill be articles from countries around the globe.CONCLUSIONHuman civilisation has gone through multiple forms and shapes and each one of them had both its good sides and the shortcomings too.Historically, you could always find some group of people struggling to achieve one thing or another.This is how we reached a capitalist society oriented towards gain and profit, disregarding the needs and desires of the majority of the population.In such a society every individual leads a struggle of its own, hoping for a better outcome.Though the path has been hard, the female half of humankind has managed to win the fight for its rights and enable equal chances compared to their male counterparts.Although there are still some things to be done, we see women involved in all relevant decision-making processes.Being offered the same possibilities, women have leveled up with men when it comes to both education and competence. With such a situation, the earnings are no longer an issue to worry about .Many organisations have enforced pay transparency leaving no possibility for any injustice.Although we still have a significant number of unemployed women, those who do work significantly contribute to the pay gap being eliminated.And, as we have seen there are multiple professions where women are actually paid more.So, to summarize, do not buy into the gender pay gap myth!

Confession of a Former Drug Addict: Learning the Value of Family Misguided Youth â€Å"Oh now that I think back about it, I was really stupid when I was young and that my mother is really unfortunate to have a son like me! † Kong said as he ended with a short embarrassed laugh while he recounts the past he isn’t exactly proud of in mandarin. Kong, 36 , had spent most of his youth in and out of the drug rehabilitation centre and prison. His parents separated while he was still young and their mother decided to bring him and his younger brother along to move into their grandmother’s place at Ang Mo Kio. With his mother busy at work to support the family and his grandmother busy attending the younger kids, the mischievous boy always finds the chance to sneak out of the house. It was then when he got acquainted and started hanging out with the older kids around his neighborhood. These are the friends that very much influenced and helped mold him into a teenage delinquent. â€Å"I was encouraged by them to join their gang, to skip school and hang out with them. And it was then when I learn how to shoplift, cutting chain off bicycles to steal, extorting money from other kids and getting into fight for the most minor reason, just for the sake of getting into trouble and seeking thrill out of it. †, Kong explained how he was a wayward boy that followed whatever his peers instigated. â€Å"And it felt really good to be part of the gang and ‘cool’ to be doing things other normal ‘good’ kids didn’t dare to do. † It was then when young Kong’s misbehaviors and actions, prove that it can have direct consequence on his family, and the first to experience it was none other than his younger brother. Both brothers were studying in the same neighborhood secondary school. Kong’s truancy and bad records kept piling up and finally one day, he even threatened to hurt the school’s principal while being called to discipline. That’s when the school decided enough is enough, and Kong’s expulsion was announced. But not just him alone, his younger brother was to be expelled along with him. Sure the younger brother wasn’t exactly the good obedient student, had been seen around Kong, caused some mischief and playful enough to skip school occasionally. But he never crossed the line or got involved with Kong’s unlawful activities. Still, the school found these reasons enough to get the siblings off their ground permanently. â€Å"The principal felt that because he’s my younger brother, he’s nature is surely as bad as me! Just because he’s my younger brother. † Kong said while shaking his head slightly. â€Å"You may think that’s unfair but things were different back then during that time. Now if something like this happened nowadays, you will see the principal and school getting onto news! † Kong ended with a laugh. From Bad to Worse His mother and grandmother blamed him for dragging his younger brother into that situation because of the troubles he brewed and being a bad influence. But this incident didn’t make Kong reflect on his actions. He didn’t think of it as a big deal. He didn’t care about anything. The teenager’s rebellious nature only served to take things for the worse. Soon after getting expelled from school, he soon finds himself experimenting with drugs. It was the norm as people around him were doing inhalants and drugs. The first he experimented was glue sniffing. Then he moved on to trying out ecstasy and heroin etc. Experimentation turns into dependency. The addiction works in an insidious way, it crept in and slowly took over Kong’s life before he realized. Days of drug taking ritual turned to weeks, then months and years. It seems like Kong wasn’t the one controlling the drugs, it was the other way round. Spending his life in a drug-fuelled haze, it revolved around being troubled over where to find money to support his next supply of drugs. Keeping up with the addiction proof to be not cheap. Although he had joined and worked for the lion dance troupe that was associated with his gang, it wasn’t enough to keep up with his expenses. To satisfy with his drug cravings, he resorted to theft and robbery, even stealing from his family. The one he hurt most during this period was his mother. Seeing her cry because of him was nothing new. His desperation for drug even made him turned his hand on his very own mother. Kong recalls that particular incident that he will feel bad for as long as he lived, â€Å"This one time I was having this great urge for drugs, but I didn’t have money with me, I ransacked the house and approached my mother in the kitchen. But she wasn’t willing to hand me any money and was screaming at me to quit. I got impatient and this sudden surge of anger rose up and I exploded,† He slapped his own mother across the face. Kong then continued remorsefully, â€Å"I was an unfilial and disgraceful son. Unfit to be human for hurting my mother like that. Like what they say, I deserved to be struck down by lightning. † Relatives chided him as being ‘useless, and a shame to the family. ’ Kong ended up caught and admitted to the drug rehabilitation centre. After his release, Kong was still mixing around with the ‘bad’ group of friends as he felt being shunned by the society and this was the group of people most accepting of him. He couldn’t stay clean and soon fell back to his old ways after gaining freedom. He was sent back to the drug rehabilitation centre once more for relapse. â€Å"I was stubborn and self-centered. I didn’t really try hard or be determined enough to change my life. I just thought I was unlucky to be caught the first few times. ’ Kong says. He continued his old ways, involving in gang fight and robbery with hurt. He was sentenced to imprisonment for a total of 7 years and given 10 strokes of cane. Turning Point When he was finally released from Changi Prison, Kong, 30 by that time, felt that he had already wasted a large part of his youth. He made sure to remind himself of the guilt and shame. The heart wrenching moment etched in his memories when he saw how his mother broke down in tears when he was sentenced, how his aged grandmother with declining health having to make her way to visit him in prison over the years. â€Å"I robbed my mother for years because of my rebellious nature, because of my selfishness. All I did was lying and being dishonest with everything they confronted with me. I never thought about the damage I imposed on my family because of my actions. I took advantage on how they dote, only to make them heart-broken. † Kong confessed. Now, he deeply understands for mistakes he made, he won’t be the only one paying his dues. His family and loved ones will inevitably bear his consequences one way or the other. Among the tattoos that he was inked over his body during his rebellious younger days, he is now sporting a ‘sak yant’ on his back, a traditional form of tattoo normally performed on followers by Buddhist monks in Thailand. He decided to embrace Buddhism and was on a religious trip to Thailand to receive a ‘sak yant’. But the tattoo wasn’t what he received. It was there where he got to know this local young woman from Chiang Mai, who soon became his wife. Kong and his wife now have two young daughters. Unfortunately, their first daughter Elina, 6, is diagnosed with minor autism and currently attending a special school. But their younger daughter has an even more unfortunate fate. Rita, now 3, was born with a severe spinal deformity which was curved at 80 to 90 degree in ‘S’ shape. She is the youngest and one of the most serious cases of congenital scoliosis in Singapore. Two titanium rods each 15 cm to 20 cm long was inserted into her body to straighten her spine and ribs when she was 2. Every six to nine months, Rita will have to go through operations until she is 14 years old, to expand the rods allowing growth. Being the sole breadwinner of the family, Kong currently works as a cargo assistant with a monthly salary of $1600. He tried to working overtime whenever possible so as to provide more support to his family. He was able to cover more about half of the medical expenses from his own Medisave and Medifunds for Rita’s medical expenses. He shared how he learnt humility and helpfulness receiving help from relatives and donations arranged by the hospital. â€Å"Sometimes I think that maybe it’s because of my past deeds, it might have been my karma that caused even my daughters to have to suffer. Being a father made me realized how much the heart hurts when parents see their children suffer, like how my mother used to feel. Even now, I haven’t revealed all Rita’s condition to my Thai wife. I’m worried she may not be able to take it. Sometimes she will cry while looking at the long deep surgery scars running on Rita’s back. .† Kong said. â€Å"I’m really grateful for my family and relatives who knew of my past, but still accepted me, loved and cared for my daughters as their own too. † Kong added. Even though life may not have turn up perfect, family is now the fuel and motivation for Kong to not turn back his old ways, to be a responsible father and son. William Shakespeare William Shakespeare On April 26, 1564, John Shakespeare's son, William, was baptized at the Stratford Parish Church. No one knows for certain when his birthday was. (Brown 22) It was thought that young Shakespeare began attending school at the age 7, in Stratford. (Wadsworth 344) Before Shakespeare reached the age of 13, his family endured hardships. Shakespeare's formal schooling ceased. At that time, William may have begun helping his father in the gloving business. (Wright 22) "There is historical warrant for such an approach. Christian images, of course, pervade Shakespeare's culture, throughout his career he obviously thought in terms of them. If those images are themselves frequently allegorical, and we should consider the extent to which the allegories are incorporated into the living texture of Shakespeare's creations." (Kirch 18) At a young age Shakespeare may have viewed annual plays and seen traveling artists. These performances possibly ignited a spark that continues to burn. (Wright 20) William Shakespeare was an Englishman who wrote poems and plays. According to many he was labeled as one of "the greatest dramatists the world has ever known and the finest poets" who wrote in the English language. Shakespeare's work relied mostly on his instincts of nature. His understanding of other people allowed him to fully grasp the quality he wrote of. (Wadsworth 342) John Shakespeare married Mary Arden in 1557. Both the Shakespeare's and the Arden's were farmers, and sold their products to make a living. (Brown 23) Shakespeare had two sisters. Joan died in 1562; Margaret died at infancy. Then in 1566 Gilbert was born. In 1569 a second child named Joan was born; in 1571 came Anne, who died when she was eight year's old. Richard was then born in 1574 followed by Edmund in 1580. (25) William Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway at the age of 18. Anne was at least 8 years her husband's senior. The marriage record dates November 27, 1582 in an Episcopal register found in Worchester. (45-46) The custom in Stratford after the eldest son married, was for the new couple to live in the house of the groom's father. In all likelihood, Shakespeare obeyed the customary procedure. (Wright 24) Shakespeare and his wife probably had a good and happy marriage. She gave birth only 6 months after they were legally wed. (Wilson 43) Shakespeare's son named Hamnet was only 11 years old when he died. He also had a daughter named Judith. Judith Shakespeare had 3 sons who died at young ages. Shakespeare's only bloodlines were the descendants of his (second) sister Joan. (Brown 25-26) Between 1585 and 1592, there was no account of a man named William Shakespeare. Typically referred to as the lost years. There were no records of his life. Some scholars believe he was living in London serving as an apprentice. Others believe he retreated and wrote under a fake name. (Wadsworth 345) At about age 20, some people thought young William stole a dear from a wealthy man in order to poach. A crime not tolerated during that period. (Wright 6) Eight years before the death of Shakespeare he wrote 4 new plays. Some scholar's debate, which plays, was his last. Very little was known about him before the age of 28. (Wilson 38) He continued to visit Stratford on occasion. (Wadsworth 347) He bought a house in London where he gradually retired. On April 23, Shakespeare was laid to rest inside the Stratford Parish Church in 1616. Shakespeare was a young 52 when he died. (Wadsworth 347) "For nearly a century after his death Shakespeare remained more a theme for criticism by the few than a subject of adulation by the many." (Brown, 2) William Kent erected a stone statue of William Shakespeare. The statue is located in the Poet's Corner of Westminster Abby. (Wright 8) Shakespeare may not have felt a calling to write when he left Stratford, but he had a lot to learn in the big city of London. (44-45) After Shakespeare went to London, he joined an acting group. He had no experience. He was merely a performer. (43) William Shakespeare was an important part of a troupe called the Lord Chamberlains Men. He eventually became an honored senior member. (11) Writing plays soon became a demanding business. Companies were always looking for new material. With few new plays, companies began paying for the plays. Once a play was sold it became the property of the company. (44-45) Shakespeare wrote 37 plays. The plays were separated into three basic categories: comedy, tragedy, and history. (Wadsworth 342)
